ESSE Fairy cooker at the Antarctic research station on Detaille Island
2017 Julian Davey from Cumbria, UK spotted an ESSE Fairy (circa 1930) during an expedition to Detaille Island in the Antarctic.
ESSE has a long-standing association with British exploration of Antarctica. Both Scott and Shackleton relied upon ESSE heating products for their pioneering expeditions and many of these cookstoves remain at various bases across the continent.
A team from the British Antarctic Survey recently returned from a visit to Rothera Research Station, Antarctica, near the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, and found ESSE cook stoves still in situ at Port Lockroy and Deception Island.
The temperature in Northern Antarctica hovers around 0˚C in December - and that’s in the middle of the Southern Hemisphere Summer!
John Hamilton, purser on the icebreaking research and supply vessel RRS James Clark Ross said: "I thought it was amazing that British Engineering helped British science and environmental studies in such far-off places. In these hostile environments, where everything else disintegrates, the stove remains."
A couple of thousand miles to the west on this huge landmass, the stove chimney at Shackleton’s Base at Cape Royds is actually visible on Google Streetview (simply key in ‘Shackleton’s Hut, Antarctica. There’s no postcode…) and there are more images here.

I always sweep the chimney flu every 2 months with a flexible extending chimney sweeping brush then clean the Iron heart as shown in the video

Can this burn a standard 25cm log length?
Hi. The firebox of the ESSE 1 will accommodate a 25cm log but our tests have shown that burning logs no longer than 20cm and with a width or diameter of no more than 12cm will produce the optimum smoke-free performance.

The ESSE 500 series of Heating Stoves are multi-fuel. The ESSE Ironheart family of cook stoves are designed to burn wood logs only.

In the late 1970s, we had an old range, much like this one. My job was to light it before going to school. It did everything you saw Fanny Craddock doing! I've got no doubt that this Esse will be brilliant. Shame I can't fit one in 😢

Your website says it uses 0.4kW/hr not the 0.2 quoted in this video. That's 9.6kW/day or 3500kW/year at today's prices that's £2.5/day or £945/year before you even cook anything. I know these aren't cheap so maybe it's only for those with deep pockets but it's all relative

ESSE Bakeheart is hand built using steel and cast iron, it has a 5kW heat output. The general rule is that 1kW will heat between 10 and 12 cubic metres. How do you install them like that? I’m looking at doing one but said needed to be 2 feet from walls.
Hi Matthew, Sarah's ESSE cooker is an electric model so clearance space is minimal. If you install a wood-burning model the clearance to combustibles will be greater. What is the reason for the cover on top? Can you remove?
Bakeheart is a wood-fired heating & cooking stove with an oven below the firebox and a hotplate on the top. The bolster lid conserves the heat for stovetop cooking and the lid's domed interior enables you to steam vegetables or toast paninis.
That "Ironheart Stove" looks remarkeably like the ancient Rayburn type 1 that was fitted in my parents old post war 1950's prefab 😃
